So apparently the Sedanocalypse is nigh, so I started thinking, did the 2+2 Coupocalypse already come and go, or was there always such a meager selection? How many 2-door, 4-seater Coupes with a usable back seat are still around today and for sale in the US? Not counting hot hatches like the Mini or Golf here. Really only Coupes with something like a trunk lid in the back. Also not counting any ridiculously priced exotics.
Let’s list them:
Audi A5
BMW 2 Series
BMW 4 Series Coupe
BMW 6 Series
Cadillac ATS Coupe
Chevy Camaro
Dodge Challenger
Ford Mustang
Honda Civic Coupe
Honda Accord Coupe
Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Infiniti Q60 Coupe
Kia Forte Koup
Mercedes C-Class Coupe
Mercedes E-Class Coupe
Scion FR-S
Scion tC
Subaru BRZ
Did I miss any?
Excluded from this list are the exotics that no normal person can afford, and the ones without a usable back seat, like the Porsche 911, Lexus RC, Audi TT, Cadillac ELR, Nissan GT, Bentley Continental GT, Rolls Royce Something, Mercedes S-Class Coupe, Maserati GranTurismo Coupe, Astons, etc
Gone now are the yesteryear Monte Carlos, Grand Prix Coupes, Solaras, Stratus Coupes, Thunderbirds, Probes, Escort Coupes, Focus Coupes, RX-#s, Eclipses, Impreza Coupes, Integras,... (not that some of these were ever decent options, but still, they’re gone and for the most part not replaced..)
And really this is prompted by me wanting to get rid of my wifes Monte Carlo SS that I’ve disliked from day 1, but her not finding anything she likes. Not that I’m insane or rich enough to buy a brand new car..
And I like lists.

Define ‘use able back seat’
For half those cars you’d have to saw your passengers’ legs off.

I am 5'7" and the Mustang’s backseat felt claustrophobia inducing with a 5'11" person sitting in the seat in front of me. I sat in a new challenger and the backseat really wasn't bad at all. Almost comfortable. Either would be tolerable for folks with kids old enough to get themselves in and out of the back, but young enough to be of a size compatible with the backseats.

That’s kind of my point. I think for these purposes “usable” means being able to put a 12 year behind a 6ft driver without squishing his legs.

One problem with 2+2s is that they used to represent a more sporty flavour. Some of the best sporty cars available now have the convenience of four or even five doors.
Today a 2-door car can only sell on style, and that market is limited.

Doesn’t look comfortable, but maybe for a 12 year old?

You know what’s completely dead? Non-performance convertibles. Gone are the days when you can walk into the dealership and buy a ragtop version of an economy car. The closest thing we have to that nowadays is the VW Eos, which is a folding hardtop. Even the Mini is being sold as a sporty car.

That drivers seat is most of the way forward.

You’re looking for a 2-door car with a back seat that humans can fit in?

Yea I think the convertibles are in a very similar boat as 2+2 Coupes. The convertible top, or the rear seats tend to be an afterthought to a sports-car. There are very few regular cars around that fit the use cases of a convertible or a 2+2.

I remember when most cars came in 2 and 4 door configurations. When did that go away? The 90's?

Opel Cascada re-badged as a Buick for the US market.

So it seems. I think a few may have made it into the 2000's but that trend seems to have fizzeled away.

Also, are those cupholders meant for the front seat passengers? And why is there nowhere to rest your elbow?
TheTurbochargedSquirrel

No where to rest your elbow because sports car and you are supposed to have both hands on the wheel. Those cup holders can be placed in three different positions in the console or be removed. They are for the front passengers by look far back because the seat is so far forwards (in the rearmost position they are actually fitted around the front of the rear seats, literally they are shaped and touch the rear seats and the chassis under the seats). There are also cup holders in the front doors.

I drive a 2010 Mustang. I just drove around my fiancée and her 15 year old sister and her 15 years old sisters friend. I can drive with someone behind me, although truly the car is basically a three seater. Pretty hard to sit behind me.
